Yes, self-esteem is very important, but when it is mis-guided then it can become a very dangerous tool in your life. It is a wise idea to see esteem from God’s eyes and learn to build your Christ-esteem.

This past week we had the first call in the Ignite Your Life Summer Series. The topic was “Building Christ-Esteem” and it was a truly enlightening. We learned that Christ-esteem removes the barriers that can get in the way when we focus on self-esteem.

Yes, self-esteem is very important, but when it is mis-guided then it can become a very dangerous tool in your life. It is a wise idea to see esteem from God’s eyes and learn to build your Christ-esteem.

What is self-esteem

From Wikepedia

Self-esteem is a term used in psychology to reflect a person’s overall evaluation or appraisal of his or her own worth. Self-esteem encompasses beliefs (for example, “I am competent” or “I am incompetent”) and emotions such as triumph, despair, pride and shame. A person’s self-esteem may be reflected in their behavior, such as in assertiveness, shyness, confidence or caution.

In other words self-esteem has a direct correlation with the way you feel about yourself and it can be presented in a number of ways.

Self-esteem is often related to what a person does as opposed to who she is. As women we have this bad because we value what we do more so than who we are. We want to be the perfect mom and when we are not we feel like failures. We want to always lend a hand to a cause, event, or anything that will show how much we really want to help. We end up so busy that we forget the value of being productive and that being productive means taking care of self.
What would happen if we dared to see ourselves as God does? What would happen if we took the time to search the word and build up our Christ-esteem vs our self-esteem?

Why would we want to do this? Why build up our Christ-esteem as opposed to our self-esteem?

Is there a difference? There can be.

Because so many relate self-esteem to “feelings of worth based on their skills, accomplishments, status, financial resources, or appearance it can lead a person to feel independent and prideful and to indulge in self-worship, which dulls our desire for God. James 4:6 tells us that “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” If we only trust in our earthly resources, we will inevitably be left with a sense of worth based on pride. Jesus told us, “You also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty’” (Luke 17:10).

Does this mean our esteem is to be low? By no means!

The Bible tells us in Romans 12:3 not to think more highly of ourselves than we ought but it does not say we are not to think highly of ourselves. Think about it. We are made in the Image of WHO….

I think you get the picture!

Why would God want us to think low of ourselves. To be humble has nothing to do with low self-esteem.

In one sense, low self-esteem is the opposite of pride. In another sense, low-self-esteem is a form of pride. Some people have low self-esteem because they want people to feel sorry for them, to pay attention to them, to comfort them. Low self-esteem can be a declaration of “look at me” just as much as pride. It simply takes a different route to get to the same destination, that is, self-absorption, self-obsession, and selfishness. Instead, we are to be selfless, to die to self, and to deflect any attention given to us to the great God who created and sustains us.

It is important to build Christ-esteem for quite a few reasons:

It takes self totally out of the picture

It places the emphasis on Christ as the Center of your Joy

It allows you to see your worth in God’s eyes with humility and awe

It gives you good grounding for making solid decision based on godly wisdom and logic

It takes you to the point of wanting to be in the perfect will of God since your focus is properly aligned!

Your self-esteem needs to rest in Christ because the essence of who you are dwells with Him:

“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4When Christ, who is your[a] life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.” (Colossians 3:1-4)

When you place your esteem in the right place then you know that you will not become boastful or full of pride. You know that your intentions are in the right place and you are not doing anything for vain glory! You have confidence to move forward without fear or shame. You can move forward without being bothered by what others think about you.

Christ-esteem is what will drive you to move forward in courageous confidence in the call on your life!

Are you ready to build your Christ-esteem? How do you plan to do this?

When I learned about emotional health and how the emotions can work, I learned that what we feel can be good or bad depending on the situation. There are many ways to interpret emotions and that is why knowing how to manage them is pertinent. People who learn to manage emotions well fair better in cooperative situations; and are good with motivating and managing others. On-the-other-hand, people who never learn to manage emotions often misinterpret emotional signals and have difficulty with relationships. This is what scientist call emotional intelligence. Although emotional intelligence probably has an inherited component, it is believed by many psychologists that people can be guided into making better use of the emotional intelligence that they possess.

[pullquote]Emotional intelligence refers to people’s ability to monitor their own and other people’s emotional states and to use this information to act wisely in relationships.[/pullquote]

Maybe you are reading this and you say that you are not that emotionally intelligent. That is ok because it can become a healthy habit. However it takes work.

I still deal with not allowing my emotions to take over good judgment. However after taking the classes I did to learn more about emotions and how to handle them I have learned some techniques that will help anyone learn to effectively manage their emotions. I will be sharing all of these ways in the Ignite Your Life group coaching program that starts July 6.

If your emotions are not healthy then it has a direct effect on your run your business and your life. Physically, when your emotions are out of whack so is your body. Spiritually, when your emotions are off kilter then your walk with God seems pretty dull and listless.

Here are some of the emotional management techniques I will be sharing with the group that you can apply to your life today!

Spiritually

With anything you are dealing with and growing in, you need to have some seed scriptures that become your a part of your daily moments of calm. Here are a few to that help with emotional management.

1. It takes wisdom to be able to manage emotions. The Word says…

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. (James 1:5 ESV). Seeking wisdom from God will help you to see how the emotion is helping or hindering your walk, your relationships, and your life.

2. God can restore your emotional health because He is a healer. The Word says…

And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you (1Peter 5:10 ESV). If you suffer with emotional issues, give them to God. He will heal you, teach you,and guide you into an emotionally healthy existence.

3. In the midst of your emotional heartache cry out to God. Sometimes we do not understand what our emotions are doing to us but we know something is not right. The Word says…

When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but theLord delivers him out of them all. He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken. (Psalm 34: 17-20 ESV) God will heal your emotional rift if you simply call on Him. Emotions will tear you apart if not management properly so let God manage them for you and show you how to maintain.

Physically

Exercise: Walking is a great stress reliever and lifting weights is a good way to release the emotion of anger because of the resistance factor.

Eating: Try to steer clear of sugar and fast foods in your diet because they lower your energy level which in turn makes your tired. When you are tired your emotional management capabilities are weakened.

Herbs: Herb like valerian root, passion flower, and chamomile are great to help ease a troubled mind and relieve your worry.

Mentally

In the Masterlife Series, book two deals with the Disciple’s Personality. There is a section in the book that talks about mastering your emotions. In this section they provide a handy acronym I use with all my clients who are dealing with emotional blocks in their life. That acronym is A.C.T.I.O.N.,. Let me break it down for you letter by letter so you get a deeper understanding and can starting using this in your life today for emotional management.

A: acknowledge the emotion. Don’t fight it. Deal with it!

C: consider why you have the emotion. Take a look at the triggers.

T: thank God that He will help you master that emotion. With God all things are possible.

I: identify the biblical response to the emotion and the circumstance. Truly God’s Word has an answer for each emotion we deal with.

O: obey the Holy Spirit. He is ready to lea you to victory.

N: nurture the appropriate Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5). If we refocus our actions we can have victory over the emotion.

The bottom line is that God gave us emotions. However He expects us to use them in a controlled, proactive manner. The typical response when working from emotions is to react. There will be occasions when we’re going to feel angry, insulted, hurt, and a multitude of other emotional responses. The key is to take the proper ACTION.

In the 7 week Ignite Your Life Group Coaching program we will go in depth about emotions and how to manage them. It is important to your walk with God and your success in life that you become emotionally healthy.

Romans 12: 1-2 tells us…

Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual[a] act of worship. 2Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

How can one be pleasing to God is we are eating stuff that leads to disease. Yes folks it is true the majority of diseases we have start in the colon; and even Dr.Oz says that many of the sicknesses we are plagued with can be eliminated with lifestyle changes. So if we are abusing our body with stuff that is not good for us, is the mind truly transformed?

Come with me a little deeper if you will because I want you to get this whole approach thing.

If our mind is transformed and we are living after the spirit and not after the flesh why is that our praise and worship can be thwarted because we are too tired to honor God with all that we have because we have a Coke or Pepsi addiction? When we come down off of that soda is gives us headaches and more. We feel like a drug addict and we crave for more.

But wait! Aren’t we supposed to be craving for God?

You see the whole living approach takes a look at everything we are doing – mind, body, and spirit – and seeing where we are thriving and where we may need to adjust or tweak some things. It connects the mind to the body so that we know what is proper and right to put in. It connects the body to the spirit so that we treat is as a true temple of God. It connects the spirit to the mind so that we are aware of what we are doing to body…

Are you getting the picture?

When you connect all three components of man – mind, body, and spirit- you tap into what the Love of God Is all about. His love is a complete love. It is not a tainted or crippled. It is complete.

It is not evil to connect your mind, body and spirit together for a more effective life. The evil part is when we don’t pay attention to what we eat, drink, and allow into our bodies. It is evil when we don’t watch the things the things that we allow to enter minds. Don’t believe me watch your attitude. What is it more like the enemy or Christ? Listen to your language. Does it speak of grace, mercy, love and the rich blessings of God? Does it encourage and motivate?

I cover this topic on Integrated Talk and I share an interesting statistic God gave me in a dream. I encourage you to listen in but before I end this piece I have a challenge for you!

We have covered the history of a temple and explored what it means to treat our body as a temple. Now it’s time for the final part where we will conclude how taking care of our bodies like a temple will create better business.

We have covered the history of a temple and explored what it means to treat our body as a temple. Now it’s time for the final part where we will conclude how taking care of our bodies like a temple will create better business.

We mentioned that when we treat our bodies like a temple we use only the best products to take care of it. We also mentioned that when our body is treated as something sacred, we cut out bad habits and create good ones. When we do these things, we are more energetic and have to spend less time recovering from an illness. We also will not have to run to the doctor every month or two for a check-up or a prescription, or even a surgery. This translates into more time on the job, being productive.

I’m sure you will agree with me that when we are energetic we will desire to work, which means we stay focused on the task at hand and we get it done in a timely manner. When we feel lethargic, or we have a headache, or back pain or our knees hurt, it’s really hard to enjoy working. This means that we won’t be able to focus and so we won’t be very productive. A healthy energetic worker is productive, and so it creates better business.

Hence, from all we have talked about, we can conclude that when we treat our body like a temple and give it only the best foods and use only the best persona-use products, as well as cut out bad habits and develop good habits, we will create a better business. It’s time we start treating our body as temple if we want a successful business.

In the first part of this topic, we looked back into history and talked about the temple that Solomon built. In this next part we’ll explore what it means to treat our body as a temple, like Paul wrote in the letter to the Corinthians.

When Solomon built the temple, he knew that is was a very sacred place and so he used the best materials to build it; so we must also use the best materials to take care of our own body. This means that we must only consume foods that will help us, and not slowly kill us; foods like organic fruits and vegetables, and not processed foods that are void of nutrition. We must also watch what we drink. Caffeinated and carbonated beverages that are loaded with sugar or artificial sweeteners, or even lots of fruit juices, should not be part of our everyday choices. Instead, opting for pure filtered water or water enhanced with the juice of half a lemon or a drop of therapeutic-grade essential oil would be a much better choice. Our entire body is made up of 80% water and totally relies on water to sustain itself and do what it needs to do. By drinking water, we will have more energy, our brains will function properly so we can think clearly, and our digestive and elimination systems will work much more efficiently as well.

In addition to good foods and drinks, we must also make sure we use the highest quality products on our skin, which is the largest organ in our body and is very permeable. Whatever we lather on it will go inside our bodies and can either heal us or intoxicate us. The lotions, the soaps, even the shampoos and conditioners and our deodorant make a tremendous difference in our quality of life and very few people realize this. The choices we make today will affect our health tomorrow. By treating our bodies like a temple and using only the best products available on the market, the healthier we will be.

When we treat our bodies like a temple, we also cut out bad habits and take on good habits. We don’t want to pollute our lungs, so we’ll quit smoking or never take on the habit to begin with. We will also kick the bad habit of drinking alcohol on a regular basis, and when we do, we won’t drink to the point that we intoxicate ourselves. On the other hand, we will adopt good habits like exercising on a daily basis with an effective, yet not necessarily long, workout program. We will also get into the habit of planning healthy meals and snacks everyday. Knowing our bodies are a sacred place, we will take the time to treat it special and give it only what is best so that our health will thrive.

When I was coming out of my depression I learned that I had to create some boundaries so that life could not take me back to the pit ever again! I did not like that pit, though I chose to dwell there for years and years. Even after I had been pulled out once or twice! I ended up right back in that dark ugly pit all over again!

What I learned to do was create a healthy space. A place in my mind where no one was allowed to leave a mess, tear up my furniture, or touch the treasures of my heart. Once I did that I put my family and friends on alert. There were going to be come changes and they had to honor them.

Why?

My very life depended on it. I was no longer going to allow someone to step into my space and take me to a place of anger, bitterness, fear, and self-loathing. I was no longer going to dwell with pit dwellers. That was their choice to stay; not mine.

Pray and ask God to show you how to deal with each person who is toxic waste in your life.

Sit down and set up the ” ‘Your name’ Healthy Space Plan”. Write down what your healthy space looks like. Write it as if it is a room in your home. What would you put in it and why? How will have these items in your healthy space help you? It can be a piece of furniture, a book, a song, even a person (no toxic folks).

Next write down 7 scriptures that will be a part of your daily visit to your healthy space. These will be your seed scriptures. I chose the number 7 because it is the number of completion and I believe God; that He will completely cure you of your toxic disease! Now say those scriptures out loud! Makes no difference who might be around you because they may need to hear them too! Write down what these scriptures mean to you and how you think they will help you get through each and every day! Because once toxicity enters your world, it will try to do it again and again.

Now write down the ways that someone can invade your space. What can they do that will make your healthy space dirty? How can they ruin the carefully placed pieces in your special room? Write down how you will clean up the mess they left. This must be an immediate clean because you do not want the dirt to get too settle. If it settles it is hard to clean out!

This is the hardest part. Confront the toxic people in love, including yourself! Tell them what you think they have done to make your life toxic. Never say, “you did this” or “you did that”! Say something like, “I do not like it when”, “It hurts me when”. Let them know what your expectations are of them when it comes to your healthy space. When we don’t give expectations, people will treat you any way they want. It is ok to let someone know how you expect to be treated because you deserve to be treated right. Once you say what you do let them know that now is not the time for arguing but you will hear what they have to say. Listen with an open ear and heart because you just may learn a thing or two about yourself. Accept it so that you can work on it! If the conversation gets heated, get up and walk away. Let them know that this is not good for either party and once they can talk in a normal tone without judging the situation then you are willing to talk again. Go into your healthy space and pray! If they will pray with you fine; if not that is fine too! If the conversation goes well, end it with prayer and leave it at the table; taking with you only the necessary parts. Don’t bring the pass back with you. You have talked about it, now leave it where it is and work on what needs to be worked on on your part. Don’t work on them!

When someone invades your healthy space let them know and never be afraid to speak up! Tell them exactly what they did and ask that they honor what you say and what must be done to clean up the stains or tears they left behind!

Remember that your healthy space is YOURS! Do not let anyone invade it! Take steps daily to keep your space clean. Dust the cobwebs, vacuum the dirt, clean the windows, and please don’t forget to take care of what lurks in the corners.

***************************************************

During my next three blog articles, we will be exploring how taking care of our body as a temple will lead to a better, more successful business. First, we will explore the meaning of our body as the “temple of the Holy Spirit”, and we’ll look back into history when Solomon built the most amazing temple. In the next blog article, we will see what it means to take care of our body as compared to caring for the temple Salomon built. This all will lead to the conclusive blog on how taking care of our body as a temple will create a better business.

In the New Testament, Paul writes to the Corinthians that our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and therefore we must honor God with our bodies. “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit? … Therefore, honor God with your body” (I Cor. 6: 19-20). Let’s explore the meaning of a temple to help us gain insight as to what Paul means by this statement.

In the Old Testament, a temple was the most sacred place; it was the House of God. When the Israelites were nomads, on the move all the time, their place of worship was a Tabernacle, which was in essence a huge tent. Once they had settled down, Solomon built the first temple in Jerusalem (ref. I Kings chapters 6 – 8). It took him seven years to build as he did not take any shortcuts.

Solomon used only the best materials when building the temple. First, he used the finest large stones for the foundation of the building. As we well know, a strong foundation will make for a strong building, so Solomon made sure that the foundation was made with the finest stones. After that, he had the best cedar and pine wood imported from Tyre. “He lined its interior walls with cedar boards, paneling them from the floor of the temple to the ceiling, and covered the floor of the temple with planks of pine.” (6:15).The inside of the temple was cedar, carved with gourds and open flowers. Everything was cedar; no stone could be seen. Then he overlaid the whole interior of the temple with gold. The furnishings were also made of pure gold. The temple contained the very best of everything – best stones, best wood and best gold. Plus, no hammer, chisel or any other iron tool was used at the temple site while it was being built. Salomon took the time to build it right, seven years, and he used all the best materials. He wanted only the best since it was the place where God was to be honored.

The victim’s mentality is one where you blame everyone else for what goes on in your world. Whether it be in the past or present you can never quite admit that you may bave had something to do with whatever the situation was. Now of course there are some situations like incest, molestation, rape and racism that you cannot usually control. However, there is something you can do to move out of the mentality that these types of situations tend to stick you in.

If you suffer from the victim’s mentality and you are running a business, there are dangerous roads ahead for you and your business:

The victim’s mentality is one where you blame everyone else for what goes on in your world. Whether it be in the past or present you can never quite admit that you may bave had something to do with whatever the situation was. Now of course there are some situations like incest, molestation, rape and racism that you cannot usually control. However, there is something you can do to move out of the mentality that these types of situations tend to stick you in.

If you suffer from the victim’s mentality and you are running a business, there are dangerous roads ahead for you and your business:

The victim gives clients the run around as to why they did not meet the deadline. While it is true, things happen, what occurs with the person who has a victim’s mentality is that they are always allowing circumstances to get in the way of productivity. They are unaware that they are creating more negative circumstances for themselves and possibly losing valuable clients.

The victim procrastinates and pushes the blames on others. They never follow-through and this is something that hurts them more than helps. People will know that they can not rely on them and will not use their services.

The victim will simply shut down and leave the client wondering what happened to the work that was to be completed. The victim will find a way to avoid the client at all cost and move on the next unsuspecting person who then, themselves, becomes an unwilling participant in the victim’s mentality.

The victim will manipulate and lie. Why? Often times it is what they have been taught to do. They had to learn to avoid harmful situations. They run their business with manipulation and lies which is not good for business. Especially for the Christian entrepreneur!

The business owner trying to run a successful business but carrying around a victim’s mentality will never truly be successful. Sure they may get a glimpse of success but it will fade fast. They will never be happy with what they have and they will run their business in a lazy manner, often times waiting for the bottom to fall out.

If you find that you are living with a victim’s mentality there are ways to conquer it:

Read Psalm 139 for assurance of who you are in God’s eyes. Often times the victim has no idea how worthy they really are to God.

Hold yourself accountable to change. You do not have to stay stuck in the mentality of a victim.

Learn your triggers. We all have triggers to the negative behaviors in our lives. Find you what your are and learn ways to combat them.

Hire a lifestyle coach. A Lifestyle coach will help you discover those areas of your life that need adjusting and will give you action steps and directions to help you with the change.

Be willing to accept the good, the bad, and the ugly. Your life is not perfect and neither is anyone else’s. Take the time to see the parts of you that are not so attractive. Find out why you have them and how they relate to your victim’s mentality.

Be willing to release. When you change, things and people will change. Be prepared to let go of what is not needed. Stuff and people can be toxic to your transformation process.

Pray and believe. The strongest component to your change will be your prayer life. Be consistent in going to God with whatever is on your mind; especially in those times when you the triggers and cause you to play the victim pop up.

You no longer have to play the victim when God is waiting to make you the conqueror!

We have many members in one body, but not all the members have the same function. (Romans 12:4)

When we read this scripture in Romans chapter 12 we see that we are created unique. God has given each of a set of skills along with talents; and with those upon the acceptance of Christ, the Holy Spirit endows us with the spiritual gifts we are to use to God’s glory. Many of us have some of the same skills, talents, and have even been blessed with some of the same gifts. Some of us even have the same function in the body.

For some it may be to teach the youth because your personality attracts kids to your message.

For some it may be to administrate because your passion is to see things done orderly and in fashion.

For some it may be to be intercessors because a part of your purpose is to stand in the gap for those who do not know the power of prayer.

Did you catch something in those last three statements? Read them again and pay close attention to the words in bold font.

Yes, there are many in working for God who will be teachers, others intercessors, and yet others administrators. And yes, many of them will share the same talents and skills. However, they will each work a little differently because of their…

Personality, passion and purpose!

God did not create the human race as robotic beings and we should never act like that. Yet, in business many do!

It is often seen in the business owner trying to be the same exact type of business person their mentor is. It is seen in the women trying to compete with each other for the same clients instead of working together as a team to provide quality service. It is seen in the person who jumps from vocation to vocation because so-and-so seems to be successful in that field.

The bottom line is that God blessed you with your own personality, your own passions, and your own purpose. While we each have the same unified purpose of glorifying God with our life, we each have a different plan that He has in mind for getting the job done right.

Take some time to assess your life. Really what does God want you to do with your life? Who does He want YOU to be (not who does He does want you to just like)? How does He desire for you to operate in your business?

Remove all the outside junk, get real with life and become all that God is calling you to be in life for a better business.

Your life will never be the same after reading this powerful though provoking book filled with great stories, quotes, scripture references and so much more.

What Mr. Holmes has done is take practical Biblical principles and applied them directly the way we live today. He has taken principles that most of us seem to forget exists and reminds us that yes they do exist. Principles like the Law of Vision, the Law of persistence and the Law of the Extra Mile are a part of this book’s unique layout. I say unique because it really can used for a study group with the questions in the back of each chapter or even an in depth personal Bible study. However, Micheal made turned it into a practical read, making it easy on the eyes and brain, for those like me who get turned off by books that speak in theological terms and all the other hoopla.

I Shall Rise Thee Up is a great read for leaders at home, work and in ministry because the principles are universal and just like a book founded on the Word, they speak to every situation in life. Because it teaches about the value of service it speaks volumes on why our greatness is never meant for us. There is so much more to it.

Michael makes sure to remind the reader again and again that God desires to raise us up and he provides more than enough proof!

As a business owner I recommend this book to all business owners because it will teach you about why you should be in business and how you can live a life of principles that carries over into your business.

Right now until May 15th, Michael is giving away the audio version of I Shall Rise Thee Up: Ancient Principles for Lasting Greatness on his site. Now I suggest you buy the book because I love touching my books. However, I know that some of you love audio so this should be perfect for you and you don’t pay a dime!
